Bangladesh manufacturing for Australian brands
Australia gives Bangladeshi apparel duty-free entry and has said publicly that it intends to keep doing so after Bangladesh graduates from Least Developed Country status. Against Australia's standard 5 percent apparel duty that is a modest but real edge, and it comes with a market where Bangladesh already supplies roughly one garment in twelve. The practical work for an Australian brand is transit time, seasonality — your summer is our winter — and the labelling and product-safety rules that differ from anywhere else.
Duty-free under Australia's LDC preferences since 2003, with a stated commitment to continue after graduation
Australia has extended duty-free, quota-free access to Least Developed Countries, including Bangladesh, since 2003. Australia's general rate on apparel is 5 percent, and that is the rate goods would attract without the preference. Canberra has stated its commitment to maintaining duty-free access for Bangladesh after LDC graduation in November 2026. As with every preference, entry depends on the goods qualifying under the applicable rules of origin — confirm your product's position with a customs broker rather than assuming it.

Seasons are inverted
An Australian summer range ships in the Northern Hemisphere's autumn, which is peak season for European and American buyers competing for the same production slots. Book capacity earlier than an Australian calendar suggests, or accept that lead times stretch exactly when you need them shortest.
Care labelling is mandatory and specific
Australia has a mandatory care labelling standard for clothing — care instructions must be present, in English, permanently attached, and adequate for the garment. Fibre content labelling is also expected. It is not the same standard as the US or the EU; specify it in the tech pack rather than reading across from another market.
Children's nightwear has its own safety standard
Australia applies a mandatory flammability and labelling standard to children's nightwear, with category labels that depend on the fabric's fire hazard. If you are making sleepwear for children, this is a design constraint from the first sample, not a check at the end.
The Australia importer checklist.
- Confirm with a customs broker that your product qualifies for duty-free entry under Australia's LDC preference and how that carries past November 2026.
- Specify Australian care labelling — permanent, in English, adequate for the garment — in the tech pack.
- If the range includes children's nightwear, design to the Australian flammability standard from the first proto.
- Book production against the Northern Hemisphere peak, not the Australian season; your summer range competes with everyone else's autumn.
- Get a sea freight quote to your entry port before pricing; transit from Chittagong to the east coast runs longer than to Europe.
